U-shaped ValleysA U-shaped valley is formed from a V-shaped valley which is created by the erosion processes of a river. A U-shaped valley is created through the erosional processes of a glacier and is very different to a V-shaped valley. It is a result of the valley having been overdeepend by a glacier, characteristically it will have become widened and deepend as the ice erodes the sides and the bottom. Hanging valleys, truncated spurs and ribbon lakes are all features which arfe linked to U-shaped valleys.

Hanging ValleysHanging valleys occur on the side of the main valley and stem from a tributary valley. In the tributary there has been much less erosion so the main valley floor is therefore much lower than the tributary valley. Often the hanging valley will produce a waterfall.

GCSE Activity - Plasticine Landforms
Here's an activity which will enable you to become much more familiar with erosional and depositional landforms of glaciers. In small groups (3 or 4) you will be allocated a landform and will need to complete an information grid for your allocated feature. Your teacher will give you an information pack about your landform to help you complete the grid - use of the interent is not allowed! Make sure you fill in your area of the grid well as you'll be teaching it to the other groups.
Does this all sound a little bit like too much writing? Want to be a bit more creative? Good because I also want each group to create a plasticine model of their landform which you will create a powerpoint with to go alongside your grid. This powerpoint can be done using moviemaker to illusrate how the landform is created or can be a labelled diagram - its up to you!
You will be given two lessons to create your landforms, fill in the gird and put together a powerpoint presentation. In the lesson on the 23rd November you will be teaching the other groups about your landform.
